Can I ever leave?
You ascend, I think it's safe to unmount. But it's not, because even the slightest indication I'll swing my other leg over will send you into a plunge. So I find myself affixed to a relentless up and down cycle. Why can't we achieve balance? Maybe because I'm half your size but twice as patient. Maybe because I'm still fighting for the version of you and me where we could at least try to figure it out.
It takes a minimal amount of collaboration, but somehow--as children we all understood you can't play on the teeter-todder with someone you don't trust. A lot of us learned that the hard way.
I didn't know then, none of us did, that playground equipment was such a beacon of wisdom. Teaching us to navigate trechery and have fun doing it. But this isn't fun anymore.
I trusted you when we got on this splintered piece of wood. I trusted that you would not jump too fiercely, or simply walk away when your feet hit gravel.
But now I find myself wanting to step off while I'm down. Shake the pebbles out of my shoes and move on. Maybe I can channel my fall into something that wakes us both from this nightmare. My hope was always to shoot you into the stratosphere, but my reality is that I physically can't.
